Himachal Pradesh IGP Zahur Zaidi and seven other policemen have been arrested in a case involving the custodial death of Kotkhai rape suspect, the Central Bureau of Investigation said on Tuesday.
Zaidi was heading the Special Investigatiion Team inquiring into the case. Among those arrested was Deputy Superintendent of Police Theog Manoj Joshi.
Prime suspect in the rape and murder of a minor, Rajender Singh (32), alias Raju, has been accused of having killed another suspect, Suraj Singh (29), by smashing his head on the floor in Kotkhai jail on July 18.
The rape case dates to July 4, when Raju — who drove a pick-up van — Suraj Singh, and four other suspects offered the 16-year-old victim, a schoolgirl returning home, a ride back home in his vehicle.
The suspects, believed to be drunk at the time of the crime, took her to an isolated place, raped, and choked her to death.
The victim’s naked body was later was found in a forest on July 6.
The rape, as well as the suspected custodial killing, led to a public outcry in Shimla. Mob violence followed the suspect’s alleged murder.
The CBI, which later took over investigations from the SIT, had recently asked permission to have the suspects undergo to polygraph test. — TNS/Agencies
